چکیده

Identifying to what degree inherent characteristics of plant species and their variation in response environment regulate the temporal stability populations is important understand patterns coexistence ecosystems. Longevity a key characteristic life history an component demographic storage, but age usually unknown for herbaceous species. In 12-year-old biodiversity experiment (Jena Experiment) comprising 80 grassland communities with six levels richness (1, 2, 4, 8, 16 60 species) four functional groups 3 4 groups), we studied 38 dicotyledonous forb (N = 1,683 individuals). The sampled individuals represented three (legumes, small herbs tall herbs) two different growth forms (species long-lived primary roots clonal rhizomes/stolons). We assessed by means ring analysis related terms peak biomass production. On average, did not affect mean or maximum found population. Age taproots increased decreased increasing richness, cancelling out each other when were analysed together. Mean population was lowest highest herbs, while legumes had intermediate age. Herbs taproot on average older than rhizome. Across all species-richness levels, more stable production over time. Synthesis. Our study shows first time across multiple that longevity forbs affected diversity surrounding community, as storage increases

Organic Farming and Landscape Structure: Effects on Insect-Pollinated Plant Diversity in Intensively Managed Grasslands

Parallel declines in insect-pollinated plants and their pollinators have been reported as a result of agricultural intensification. Intensive arable plant communities have previously been shown to contain higher proportions of self-pollinated plants compared to natural or semi-natural plant communities. Though intensive grasslands are widespread, it is not known whether they show similar patter...

Plant diversity and productivity experiments in european grasslands

At eight European field sites, the impact of loss of plant diversity on primary productivity was simulated by synthesizing grassland communities with different numbers of plant species. Results differed in detail at each location, but there was an overall log-linear reduction of average aboveground biomass with loss of species. For a given number of species, communities with fewer functional gr...

Stability of production and plant species diversity in managed grasslands: A retrospective study

Plant biodiversity theory suggests that increased plant species diversity contributes to the stability of ecosystems. In managed grasslands, such as pastures, greater stability of herbage production would be beneficial. In this retrospective study, I used data from three reports from the 1930s, 1940s, and 1960s to determine whether increasing mixture complexity contributed to yield stability wi...

How generalist herbivores exploit belowground plant diversity in temperate grasslands

Belowground herbivores impact plant performance, thereby inducing changes in plant community composition, which potentially leads to cascading effects onto higher trophic levels and ecosystem processes and productivity. Among soil-living insects, external root-chewing generalist herbivores have the strongest impact on plants. However, the lack of knowledge on their feeding behaviour under field...

Plant community composition, not diversity, regulates soil respiration in grasslands.

Soil respiration is responsible for recycling considerable quantities of carbon from terrestrial ecosystems to the atmosphere. There is a growing body of evidence that suggests that the richness of plants in a community can have significant impacts on ecosystem functioning, but the specific influences of plant species richness (SR), plant functional-type richness and plant community composition...
